The Social Host Ordinance law (SHO) was introduced to prevent underage drinking by offering a deterrent for parents who allow their children to host parties that involve alcohol. This law was passed with the help of the Pacifica Partnership program and Oceana senior, Desmond Garrido, who has been part of this program for four years.

As a freshman, Desmond was overwhelmed with the idea of a hundred hour community service requirement, and did not know where to begin. He said, “I came to Oceana because of my cousin, Ninah Solidum, and when I first heard about community service, I was shocked. She was the one who encouraged me to join partnership because she was also part of the program”.

Desmond has now completed 230 hours of community service, more than double the requirement, and has made an incredible impact in the community.

Every Wednesday after school, Desmond and the other members of the Pacifica Partnership program in Oceana, start their meetings by saying the highs and lows of their week. Then, they do different kinds of activities such as, discussing future events that the group will be involved in and sometimes the group would just hang out.

Being a part of this program has had a lot of perks. For example, Desmond got to go to Disneyland for free with two of his friends for a conference for three days.

Desmond hopes that he can get younger students interested in joining this program so that there will be a variety of classes once him and other senior leaves the program.
