Are all schools a safe place for students to be themselves? Not at Anderson County Senior-Junior School in East Central Garnett, Kansas, Where 13-year-old Skylar Davis has been attending all year. Davis has been wearing a flora brown cross-body Vera Bradley purse to all of his eighth grade classes everyday without any problems. Until one day Davis was called to the administration office and was asked to take off the purse. Davis was appalled. According to KCTV 5 News Davis said, “It expresses myself and I think everyone else can wear it, so I wear it as well.” Davis didn’t understand why they wanted him to take off the purse while the girls in the school get to wear theirs. Davis refused to take the purse off and was suspended. After the school called Davis’ mother she was furious and looked in the school handbook and saw nothing about purses in it. Davis suspension was originally set for one day, but Davis is refusing to go back until he is treated fairly, and according to KCTV the school has told Davis mother that when Davis comes back to school he can not wear the purse. Davis tells KCTV 5 news that, “Everyone should have the same privileges.” The school has not responded to any questions news reporters have asked. No one knows why was Davis was asked to take off his purse now, but at least Davis has the support of his friends and family during this time.
