This new generation of the Pokemon series has made a huge leap forward in improvements. With the mechanic breakthroughs this game has made, like the new Pokemon Type and Mega-Evolution, some players, new and veteran, think that this is the best addition to this RPG series yet.
Pokemon X and Y is the sixth generation in the Pokemon series, and takes place in a new region called the Kalos region, which contains 69 new Pokemon, bringing the total number of Pokemon to 718. This new region, like the other regions, is based off real life world locations; the Kalos region closely resembles France.
This is the first installment in the series to have full 3D gameplay, everything in the game is made of 3D models, unlike the previous games which contained mostly 2D sprites.
New Moves & Abilities:
Generation six has 50 new moves, bringing the total to 609. There’s also 24 new abilities, bringing the total number of moves to 188.
Like every Pokemon game, Pokemon X and Y has a new team of villains, called Team Flare, whose goal is to make money (like every villainous team) and to create a “beautiful and better” world without humans.
Players can use Pokemon-Amie to interact and play with their Pokemon to develop stronger bonds with them. Using Pokemon-Amie can raise a Pokemon’s affection for its owner, and that will result in the Pokemon performing better in battle. A Pokemon with high affection is more likely to: land a Critical Hit more often, dodge hits more often, gain extra experience per battle, shake off Status Conditions quicker, do extra damage, and survive hits that would otherwise make the Pokemon faint.
Horde encounters are a new way to encounter Pokemon in generation six. It enables players to battle several wild Pokemon at the same time. These battles provide a lot of experience, but are challenging because the player’s Pokemon can only attack once, then endure all of the attacks from each of the opposing Pokemon before attacking again, if it survives.
New Pokemon Type: Fairy
A new type was also introduced, called Fairy type, bringing the total number of Pokemon types to 18. This type was added to balance the previously overpowered Dragon type, which before was only weak to Ice types and Dragon types. There are a lot of new Pokemon that are Fairy type, but most of the Fairy type Pokemon consist of Pokemon from previous generations, who were previously a single type or Normal type.
Fairy type Pokemon are characterized by their pink, squishy, fluffy, and delicate complexion. Unlike their polar opposite, Dragon types, which are characterized by their dark, tough, bulky, and scary complexion.
Fairy type is “Super-effective” against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting types, and “Not-very-effective” against Fire, Poison, and Steel types. Fairy types are weak to Poison and Steel types, and resistant to Fighting, Bug, and Dark types, Fairy types are also immune to Dragon type attacks.
Mega Evolution is a new battle mechanic in Pokemon X and Y. Once per battle, a player may activate a “Mega-stone” that one of their Pokemon is holding, the Pokemon will then change its form, shape, color, stats, abilities, and for some Pokemon, even their Type will change. Currently, only 26 Pokemon can Mega Evolve, and some Pokemon have a different Mega Evolution form depending on which game they’re in, X or Y.
Like every Pokemon game, X and Y has Legendary Pokemon. A Legendary Pokemon is a Pokemon that has no evolution, cannot breed, are usually genderless, and have incredibly high stats compared to regular Pokemon.
Pokemon X’s mascot is Xerneas, a Fairy type Legendary Pokemon, it is known as the Pokemon of Life, and is exclusive to Pokemon X. Pokemon Y’s mascot is Yveltal, a Dark/Flying type Legendary Pokemon, it is known as the Pokemon of Destruction, and is exclusive to Pokemon Y.
X and Y has one other Legendary Pokemon, called Zygarde (Pokemon Z), a Dragon/Ground type Pokemon, it is known as the Pokemon of Order.
During the player’s journey they will have a chance to catch Xerneas or Yveltal, depending on which game they’re playing. Team Flare will catch the other Legendary Pokemon, in order to attempt to take over the world.
Pokemon X and Y is the best addition to the series in eight years, far surpassing the last two generations of games. Like the Pokemon in its game, this series has evolved into a whole new experience, yet still has the sense of a Pokemon game. With its new game/battle mechanics, graphical innovations, and Type balancing, this game will be known as an amazing progression and revolutionary turning point in the series. Players new to the series, and veterans alike, will love this game.
