Golden Globe Awards Preview

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards are finally here! Many new actors and actresses are nominated along with many returning actors and actresses such as Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, and many more.

The top five movies listed for best drama include, “12 Years a Slave,” “Captain Phillips,” “Gravity,” Philomena,” and “Rush.” “12 Years a Slave” might have the best chance of winning this award because of its “unflinching brutal look at American slavery.”  As for musical or comedy, the top five included in these categories are “American Hustle,” “Her,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Nebraska,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” “American Hustle” has a good chance of winning this award, due to its high ratings so far and its impeccable cast. The director, David O’ Russel’s “Silver Linnings Playbook” won last year and featured some of the same actors such as Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

The top five actors for best drama include Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave;” Idris Elba, “Mandela;” Tom Hanks,Captain Phillips;” Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club” and Robert Redford “All is Lost.” The most favored to win so far would probably be Chiwetel Ejiofor for his incredible role he played in “12 Years a Slave.”

For the musical/comedy category, the top five actors are, Christian Bale, “American Hustle;” Bruce Dern,Nebraska;” Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street;” Oscar Isaac, “Inside Llewyn Davis” and Joaquin Phoenix,Her.” The most favored so far for musical or comedy would probably be Leonardo DiCaprio for his convincing and well-played role in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”  

As for the actresses, the top five included in best drama would be Cate Blanchett,”Blue Jasmine;” Sandra Bullock, “Gravity;” Judi Dench, “Philomena;” Emma Thompson, “Saving Mr. Banks” and Kate Winslet in “Labor Day.” Most likely to win for this category would have to be Emma Thompson, for her dramatic and persuasive role she played so well in “Saving Mr. Banks.”

For best actress in the musical/comedy genre the nominees include Amy Adams, “American Hustle;” Jule Delpy, “Before Midnight;” Greta Gerwig, “Frances Ha;” Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Enough Said” and Meryl Streep, August: Osage County.” The most favored actress for this category would probably be Meryl Streep for her electrifying, as usual, performance in “August: Osage County.”

For best supporting actor, the nominees include Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips;” Daniel Brühl, Rush;” Bradley Cooper,American Hustle;” Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave” and Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club.” Most likely to win for this category is Michael Fassbender because of the incredible way he captured all the worst traits of a brutal slave owner. He made the role complex enough to capture the audience’s interest.

As for the best supporting actresses, Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine; “Jennifer Lawrence, “American Hustle;” Lupita Nyong’o, “12 Years a Slave;” Julia Roberts, “August: Osage County” and June Squibb in Nebraska.” Most likely to win for this category would be Jennifer Lawrence for her brilliant portrayal of a New Jersey housewife with attitude. This is quite a turn from her well-known performance as “The Hunger Games'” Katniss Everdeen.

There are many others categories up for grabs, such as best Animated Film, best Foreign Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Song in a Motion Picture and several awards for television series as well.  This year’s Golden Globe awards will air tonight at 5:00 p.m. on NBC.
