Today’s streamlined, fully connected world is now honing a new nickname: Online Television Addicts. This is all due to the mega popularity of watching television and movies online via providers, such as Hulu, Fancast, and even illegal streams, that have steadily amassed an audience. However, online entertainment provider Netflix  takes most of the credit for giving Americans and a large percent of the world an insanely great amount of a new obsession, viewing television shows and movies on the Internet.

Netflix wasn’t always a major juggernaut in online television, however. Founded in 1997, the company first emerged as a pay-for-rental DVD-by-mail company. Customers would sign up for an online account and subscribe to a monthly flat-fee service to receive DVD movies by mail, which was launched in 1999. Its member count skyrocketed after the initial service launch, gathering more than five million members by 2006.

The company eventually started streaming-on-demand online for their members in 2007. Customers now had 24-hour access to a large number of movies and TV shows on-demand. Netflix has stretched its availability to its customers over the years, emerging from its flagship Web site to mobile applications on smartphones such as iPhones and Androids. In a surprising turn, the hugely successful company released “House of Cards,” an original television series in their own name. The popular series “Orange is the New Black” also premiered on Netflix to praised critical reception.

People have already considered Netflix as a standalone TV channel. Its unbelievable success is mostly due to the company’s timing. No other company had such a dynamic way of bringing a new sense of entertainment to both American and international audiences. The company’s success can only go up from here on out.
