Coca Cola’s one minute Super Bowl advertisement that featured a multilingual rendition of “America the Beautiful” caused a stir of emotions amongst viewers. Coca Cola’s ad was meant to showcase America’s amazing diversity and, while refreshing to many, left a bitter taste in the mouths of some viewers.
The ad starts with “Oh beautiful oh spacious skies” before switching to several other languages. Near the end of the commercial, two gay couples were shown. These two facts sparked up a large amount of outrage from viewers. The commercial spot dredged up many hot topic issues for right wingers, such as the ongoing debate over the codification of English as the primary language in the U.S., immigration reforms, and the acceptance of same-sex relationships in mainstream media. Coca Cola’s inclusion of the two gay couples could be because of the pressure for being a sponsor of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, where the government has taken an anti-LGBT stance in the weeks leading to the games.
While some critics took to Coca Cola’s Facebook and Twitter to denounce the ad and boycott their products, many others praise Coca Cola for embracing the ideal of the United States as a melting pot.
