Dear Sex Ed Squad,

What’s the legend behind “popping the cherry”? Is it true?

– Hymen Trouble.

Dear Hymen Trouble,

The legend behind popping the cherry is that the hymen blocks opening of the vagina. When it breaks, it’ll hurt and there’s going to be a lot of blood.

The truth is that it depends on the person. Through out a woman’s life, the hymen can slowly deteriorate due to hormones.  One could tear a hymen doing rigorous activities such as horseback riding, gymnastics, etc.  It really just depends on the person.  But even if the hymen does tear during an activity – it isn’t going to be Niagara Falls.  Nothing actually “pops,” it kinda just tears.  The actual tearing of the hymen isn’t painful – there aren’t any nerve endings on the membrane.  Sex shouldn’t be painful (unless you want it that way.)

Your friendly neighborhood Sex Ed Squad.
