Alex Smith led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC championship game against the New York Giants in the 2011 season but fell short and lost by a field goal and the New York Giants ended up winning the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots.

In the 2012 season, Smith started 10 games and threw for 1,737 yards and 13 touchdown passes with a quarterback rating of 104.1, which was one of the best in the NFL. Smith lost his starting position to Colin Kaepernick after suffering a concussion against the St. Louis Rams. The very next week Kaepernick started against the Chicago Bears and had a phenomenal game which the 49ers won 32-7.

Ever since then, Smith has been a backup quarterback and, now that the season has ended, the 49ers are now looking to trade or release Smith. Many teams are looking to acquire Smith such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, and the Buffalo Bills.
